Breast augmentation with implants

Choosing implant shape and volume with anatomy and future follow-up in mind.

Implants change breast volume and shape. Before surgery, discuss realistic outcomes, the incision, device-specific risks and the possibility of further operations.

01 / Reasons to consider surgery

What patients ask about

  • A wish to change volumeSize is chosen based on the chest, tissues and expectations.
  • AsymmetryImplants can be part of the plan, but perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed.
  • Loss of fullnessA lift may also be needed after pregnancy or weight changes.
  • ReconstructionAfter treatment for a breast condition, the plan is agreed with the oncology team.
02 / Options and limitations

What shapes the treatment plan

Implants differ in filling, shape, surface and size. Selection depends on tissues and the risks of the particular device.

Implants are not lifetime devices that require no follow-up. Examinations, replacement or removal may be needed. Discuss the manufacturer's information and rare serious complications, including BIA-ALCL.

03 / Preparation and technique

Implant shape, incision and pocket

The consultation compares round, anatomical and ergonomic models, surfaces and sizes. Pocket position relative to the chest muscle and the access incision depend on tissue thickness and breast shape. You should know the exact device model and the follow-up plan.

Through the agreed incision, the surgeon forms a pocket, places the implant and closes the tissue in layers. With substantial sagging, a simultaneous lift is a planned additional stage with its own scars.

04 / Contraindications and risks

When surgery is postponed or the plan changes

Uninvestigated breast changes are assessed first. Active infection, pregnancy and breastfeeding require postponing cosmetic surgery. Diabetes, endocrine conditions, cancer and heart, vascular, liver or kidney disease are assessed individually. Tissue condition, existing scars and the implant follow-up plan are considered.

Possible complications include capsular contracture, rupture or displacement, infection, pain, asymmetry, changes in sensation and further surgery. Rare implant-associated tumours have been reported; risk varies by device type.

05 / Recovery

Support garments and implant follow-up

Swelling, tightness and discomfort are possible initially. The team explains support garments, care and examinations.

Sport and upper-body activity resume gradually. Implant monitoring is needed beyond the initial recovery.

Your surgeon's personal instructions take priority over general information on this site. Seek medical help immediately for severe pain, shortness of breath or a sudden deterioration.

Questions and answers

Questions to discuss

Can I choose implants solely by the breast size I want?

No. Chest width, tissue thickness, existing shape and asymmetry matter. Volume, profile and model are chosen together, not solely by millilitres.

Do implants need follow-up after the wounds heal?

Yes. Implants are not considered lifetime devices. Follow-up, possible examinations and reasons for replacement or removal are discussed before placement.

Is garment use the same for round and anatomical implants?

No. The postoperative guide sets out different regimens. Follow the instructions for your implant type and your surgeon’s personal advice.
