The surgical plan is agreed during a consultationWhen liposuction is considered
Surgery reshapes specific areas with persistent local fat deposits, even at a stable weight. Liposuction does not treat obesity or replace weight loss.
The result depends on fat distribution, skin elasticity, proportions and future weight changes. If skin is significantly stretched, fat removal may be insufficient. Surgery does not remove stretch marks, cellulite or separate masses such as lipomas; these are assessed separately.
The consultation determines whether surgery fits your goals and what limitations to expect.
Which areas are assessed
Local fat can coexist with excess skin. Technique selection depends on tissue condition and health rather than age alone.
- Abdominal liposuction ↗The surgeon assesses subcutaneous fat distribution, skin and muscles. This helps determine whether liposuction is sufficient and whether to include the flanks. Surgery changes contours but is not a weight-loss method.
- Back liposuction ↗The surgeon assesses the back and adjacent contours rather than a single fold. Surgery does not treat excess body weight.
- Chin liposuction ↗Fullness here depends on skin and anatomy as well as fat. The surgeon assesses the chin, neck and lower face together.
- Arm liposuction ↗During the examination, the surgeon determines how much fullness is due to fat and how much is due to skin or other tissue.
- Leg and thigh liposuction ↗The consultation clarifies the areas involved: the inner, outer or front surfaces of the thighs and their transition to adjacent areas.
- Knee liposuction ↗Knee fullness may be due to fat, skin, swelling or other causes. The surgeon assesses the knees and adjacent leg areas.
When surgery is postponed
Before elective surgery, health, treatment and tissue healing are assessed. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, acute infection, a flare-up of chronic illness or skin inflammation may require postponement. Clotting disorders and anticoagulants change bleeding risks; do not stop prescribed medication yourself.
Diabetes, a history of cancer, immune conditions and heart, lung, kidney or liver disease require individual assessment and sometimes a specialist consultation. Elective cosmetic surgery in minors is considered separately; this information is for adults.
How surgery is performed
Standard liposuction removes subcutaneous fat with a cannula through small access incisions. If the plan includes fat transfer to another area, the possibilities and risks of body contouring are discussed separately.
- Consultation and assessmentThe surgeon reviews your goals, health, previous surgery and tissue condition.
- MarkingThe surgeon marks the agreed areas before surgery.
- AnaesthesiaChosen after anaesthetic assessment; local anaesthesia is not always suitable.
- Fat removalA cannula is introduced through small access incisions; their position depends on the area.
- CompletionDressings are applied to the access sites; closure depends on the technique.
- ObservationBefore discharge, the team provides instructions and schedules follow-up examinations.
Risks and expectations
Tell the surgeon about conditions, allergies, medication, supplements, smoking, previous surgery and anaesthesia experience. Discuss realistic contours and whether excess skin requires another procedure.
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, fluid collections, irregularities and asymmetry, prolonged changes in sensation, anaesthesia complications and thrombosis. Individual risks and possible further surgery are discussed before consent.
After liposuction
Timing depends on the number of areas, extent of surgery and healing.
Inpatient observation depends on the extent of surgery and anaesthesia. Before discharge, the team explains dressing and incision care, medication and follow-up examinations.
Swelling, bruising, soreness or numbness can last longer than a few days. Compression garments are prescribed for some areas; the surgeon determines the schedule. Contours are assessed as swelling gradually subsides.
Intense activity, hot baths, sauna use and swimming are temporarily restricted. Return to work, sport and travel depends on the extent of surgery and the activity involved.
Stable weight helps maintain the result; later weight gain can change contours again. Contact the team immediately for severe pain or sudden deterioration.
