Breast lift

Mastopexy to correct breast drooping and shape.

A lift repositions the tissue and nipple and removes excess skin. It does not necessarily increase volume; implants or fat transfer are discussed separately.

01 / Reasons to consider surgery

What patients ask about

  • Drooping tissueNipple position relative to the crease beneath the breast helps assess the degree of change.
  • Loss of shape after pregnancy or weight changesSkin can lose elasticity and the upper breast can lose fullness.
  • AsymmetryThe plan may differ for the right and left breast.
  • Stretch marksSome skin changes remain; surgery does not remove all stretch marks.
02 / Options and limitations

What shapes the treatment plan

Techniques leave a scar around the areola, a vertical scar or an additional incision beneath the breast. The shortest scar does not always provide the correction needed.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight changes can alter the shape again. Breast examinations depend on age and medical history.

03 / Preparation and technique

Periareolar, vertical or anchor lifting

The degree of sagging is assessed from nipple position relative to the breast fold and the amount of excess skin. A periareolar incision surrounds the areola; a vertical lift adds a downward incision; an anchor lift adds one along the breast fold. An implant can add volume but does not replace excess-skin removal.

After marking and anaesthesia, the surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes tissue and raises the nipple–areola complex. A lift without implants does not add volume through an implanted device.

04 / Contraindications and risks

When surgery is postponed or the plan changes

For mastopexy, the breasts, skin and existing scars are assessed; suspicious changes are investigated first. Surgery is postponed during pregnancy, breastfeeding or active infection. Clotting disorders and immune, endocrine, heart, kidney or liver conditions are assessed according to how well they are controlled.

Possible complications include asymmetry, visible scars, changes in nipple sensation, healing problems, recurrent drooping and effects on breastfeeding.

05 / Recovery

Support garments and scars after mastopexy

Swelling, bruising and temporary changes in sensation are possible. The surgeon determines support garments and incision care.

Sport and chest-muscle activity resume as advised by the team. Shape and scars change gradually.

Your surgeon's personal instructions take priority over general information on this site. Seek medical help immediately for severe pain, shortness of breath or a sudden deterioration.

Questions and answers

Questions to discuss

Can breasts be lifted without implants?

Yes. Mastopexy repositions tissue and removes excess skin. Implants are discussed separately if more volume is also desired.

How are vertical and anchor lifts compared?

The choice depends on sagging, nipple position and excess skin. The shortest scar does not always allow the necessary correction.

Can pregnancy change a mastopexy result?

Yes. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight fluctuations can alter breast shape again. Discuss surgical timing if pregnancy is planned soon.
